Animation and VFX (visual effects) both use computers to create images that look real or magical. Students often confuse them, but the day-to-day work is quite different.
Animation: creating everything from scratch
In animation, the whole world is made by artists — characters, places and movement. Think of animated films, cartoon series and game cinematics. You will model, texture, rig, animate and light 3D characters and scenes.
VFX: mixing real footage with computer graphics
In VFX, artists start with real camera footage and add or change things — explosions, creatures, backgrounds, crowds, or removing wires and green screens. Think of action films, web series and TV ads. You will learn rotoscopy, camera tracking, compositing and FX simulation.
Quick comparison
- Love characters and storytelling? Animation suits you.
- Love movie effects and how shots are made? VFX suits you.
- Enjoy precise, technical problem-solving? VFX compositing and tracking can be a great fit.
- Want to work on games too? Animation and 3D skills carry over well into game art.
Can you learn both?
Yes. Both share a 3D foundation, and many courses cover basics of each. MAAC’s ADVFX Plus, for example, teaches 3D in Maya before moving into Houdini FX and Nuke compositing.
