Animation is no longer only about cartoons. The same skills are used in films, OTT series, games, advertising, e-learning, product videos and social media. If you enjoy drawing, stories, films or games, animation can be a real career path after Class 12 — whatever your stream.
What do animators actually do?
An animated film or game is made by a team. Each person does one part of the work:
- Storyboard artists plan each shot like a comic strip.
- 3D modelers build characters, props and environments.
- Texturing and look-development artists give surfaces colour and detail.
- Riggers add a “skeleton” so characters can move.
- Animators bring characters to life — walking, talking, acting.
- Lighting artists light the scene like a film set.
- Compositors put all the layers together into the final image.
You do not need to master everything. Most professionals specialise in one or two roles after learning the full pipeline.
Which skills do you need?
- Observation — noticing how people move, how light falls, how objects look.
- Patience and practice — good work comes from many attempts.
- Software skills — tools like Maya, Blender, ZBrush and Unreal Engine.
- A portfolio — a collection of your best work. This matters more than marks when studios hire.
Do you need to be great at drawing?
Drawing helps, especially for storyboards and character design. But many 3D roles — modeling, lighting, rigging, texturing — rely more on practice with software and a good eye. Plenty of students who “can’t draw” do well in 3D.
How to choose an animation course
- Check the full curriculum: does it cover the complete pipeline, from pre-production to final render?
- Look for real projects and a portfolio at the end, not just theory.
- Ask which software is taught and whether it is current.
- Ask about career support — portfolio reviews, interview preparation and placement assistance. Be careful of anyone who “guarantees” a job.
- Visit the centre. See the labs and meet the faculty before you decide.
